The beginner's guide to formatting your document in APA with illustrated examples

Students who have written a lot of essays and papers according to the APA format know that this format provides up to five levels of headings. At the same time, it should be known that the initial heading cannot be stated as the word 'introduction'. This is because it is automatically assumed that the paper or essay is beginning with an introduction.

The first and second level of headings has their own paragraphs while the remaining three headings are considered as run-in headings. These generally come at the beginning of the paragraph.

The title of the essay should be written in boldface and must be centered. Words that serve no purpose or are abbreviations or vague acronyms should not be used in the title. All the text that appears on the title page must be double-faced.

The references also have their own separate page like all the other sections of the essay. On the Microsoft Word document, this can be created using the citations and bibliography feature at the tab of References. After clicking on the feature, students can add in all the necessary details regarding the source and then generate the bibliography at the end. This will also generate in-text citations. If there are any other requirements, for example, if the instructor wants the students to add page numbers, then the in-text citation can be modified using the edit citation option. This can be done by right-clicking on the citation.

After the title page is the page allocated for the abstract of the paper. The word ‘abstract’ should come on the first line of the page. This should not be underlined or italicized. This heading should also not be in quotation marks. The abstract of an APA essay is a concise and brief summary of all the contents of the paper. At least, the research topic, research design, methodology, participants, results, and conclusions should be a part of the abstract. Typically, it should not be more than 250 words. After the abstract is written, on another line, the keywords can be written. The heading of keywords would be in the normal font but it would be italicized. The keywords will not be numbered, rather they will be separated by commas. Through these keywords, students and researchers can easily locate their work in the databases.

If there are any tables used in the paper, all of them should come under her tables section. This section should come after the references page. There should be a table number for each table along with an appropriate and concise title. The explanatory text that comes under the table should come in a table note. This text must not contain any information which is different from the essence of the table. Line spacing in tables under the APA guidelines can be single. In some cases, for better clarity, it can also be 1,5. Students and researchers must be aware of the fact that not everyone is enlightened enough about a particular subject matter. Even if the content of the table seems obvious, there should be an adequate heading for all the columns and rows of the table.
