How to add direct & Indirect Quotes in Rhetorical Analysis Essay?

When you are reading any essay, you observe that there are some words that set aside from the rest. These words are often enclosed in a set of Quotation Marks (“”). Normally, these words are there to indicate that you are using the words of another person or you are writing a title for your essay. Another thing that you observe is that they are always used in the form of pairs.

These are generally of two types: Direct and Indirect Quotations. Let us discuss these concepts for the sake of clarity of the reader before we show you there use quotations in a rhetorical analysis essay.

A direct quotation is the exact wordings of a person. This reading is included to either start a discussion in an essay or to form an ending argument. A direct quotation is included in a pair of quotation marks. An indirect quotation is a restatement of what someone else has said or written. This kind of quotation does not use the exact wordings of a person; therefore, the writer does not need to use quotation marks in this case. An example of both cases is as follows:

Direct quotation: Edison said, “An invention is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration”

Indirect quotation: Edison thought that an invention is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration.

The main question that arises from this discussion is why do we need to observe this distinction? It is because the difference between exact words and paraphrased words is very important in today’s world. If the words of any important personality are quoted without the use of quotation marks, the reader thinks that the writer has plagiarized the words and therefore he is subjected to legal action. This can ruin the reputation of the writer.

Quotations and Word Processing Software

Computer software has advanced a lot over the years, especially in the area of Word Processing Software. Most of this software like MS Word can easily catch errors in spelling, punctuation and grammar. An essay writer feels that the computer should be left with dealing with the errors of punctuation and they do not need to be familiar with the rules. But they should remember that the software will do the things that it is programmed to do and there is always a chance of human error in it.

Confused? Let us again try to convey the meaning of the above paragraph with an example:

  • The manager said to the team that they were not giving their best.
  • The manager said, “The team are not giving your best”

The first sentence cited as an example is an indirect quotation. The manager is expressing his disapproval at the performance of the team under his supervision. However, there is a chance that the team was working around the clock and the manager just wanted more progress. Is it possible that the manager was just exaggerating the gravity of the situation?

The second sentence is a direct quotation but the direct sentence does not explain to the reader to whose team the manager is referring: his team or someone else’s. Is there any third party involved?

Word processing cannot pick these kinds of errors. They will not mark these sentences as grammatically incorrect. The sentences may have the same words but the meaning is not the same. Hence, it can be proved that the knowledge to use the quotation marks at the right time can help you to save the reader from a lot of confusion. Punctuating Direct Quotations

Quotations marks are used to show the words that are used by a person in an exact manner. In many cases, the reader would like to identify who is speaking to him through the pages. A writer can use these words at the beginning, the middle and the end of the quote that he is using.

The important thing that the writer should remember is that he should always capitalize the first letter of the quote, even if it is not at the beginning of the sentence. When using the identifying words in the middle of the quoted words, the beginning of the second part of the quote does not need to be capitalized.

Use commas between identifying words and quotes. The writer should remember that the quotation marks need to be placed after the use of commas and periods. Place the quotation marks after the question marks and exclamation marks, but only if the question or exclamation mark is the part of the quoted text. Quotations inside of Quotations

In case we have to use a quotation within a quotation, the writer must use a single quotation mark instead of a double one. Let us specify this with the help of an example:

“The review about the Rock Band System of a down say, ‘This band raises the issue in our society that other musical bands ignore’”

You can clearly observe that the single quotation marks are used to explain the words of another source for the topic that you are discussing.

Titles used in your essay

The quotation marks are also used if the writer is using the titles of other writings and works of literature such as songs, short stories, essays, poems and chapters quoted from important books. In most cases only shorter titles are used with quotation marks. The longer titles of writings such as magazines, newspapers, books, novels, reports and albums are often italicized.
